The number one thing that must be done when in Washington DC is to trek down the National Mall. Make sure you have your camera to get pictures of the historic and national buildings and monuments such as the Capitol, the Washington Monument, the White House and the Lincoln Memorial. Take some time to view these, and try not to hit them on a busy day. You’ll be overawed by the size and splendour of them all.
The city also offers up a huge collection of museums, some of which are free for the public to visit, others which are not. Make sure to research which ones are ‘must-sees’ on your list beforehand to save on time and money. The Smithsonian is truly an unmissable place, comprising of the world’s largest museum and research complex centre with everything from American Art and History collections to the National Zoo and an Air and Space Museum.
If you’re in a rush to see all the typical tourist traps, why not buy yourself a one-day ticket for the Hop-on Hop-off Trolley Tour? It’s definitely the easiest and most convenient way to get between all the big sights, with 20 stops and trolleys departing every 30 minutes.
To get away from all the crowds of tourists, head out to some of the surrounding districts. Georgetown is often cited as being the best place to shop, but it also offers a very quaint atmosphere with back streets filled with old houses.
